Hello Service Learning Blog

Welcome to the 2019-20 SES Middle School Service  LEARNING Blog!!!

What is "service learning anyway??? How is it different from just "service?"

"True service learning for social justice is a shared partnership!" - Amy Kleiner

What service learning is NOT
-one-sided
-charity
-volunteering without connecting

What service learning IS
-two-sided
-mutually beneficial
-tied to outcomes

How could this article from "Oregon Humanities" about the SES 3rd grade musical from a few years back connect to our approach to service in the middle school this school year???  SES - More to the Story...

STOP THE BLEED TRAINING

Tuesday, April 30, 6:30-8pm: Stop the Bleed workshop at SES

Dear Sunnyside Community,

The Emergency Preparedness Cohort of Sunnyside reached out to Stop the Bleed, taught by an organization from Emanuel Hospital. Stop the Bleed is led by trained nurses who will teach us how to stop bleeding. Our cohort is focusing on emergency preparedness, which dips into the topic of bleeding out from an injury sustained in an earthquake, shooting or other event. We will be hosting a FREE Stop the Bleed Workshop in the Sunnyside Auditorium on April 30, from 6:30-8pm.

Parents, teachers and middle school students are invited to attend the event. Please click here to sign up. If a student is coming without an adult, they need to sign up also and make sure they have written consent to attend that says, "My child, ____ has permission to attend the Stop the Bleed class at Sunnyside School."

It would be great if you donate around $5 at the entrance to help raise money for the Sunnyside Go Fund, but if that is not affordable or you don't want to pay, you are still welcome.

More information on Stop the Bleed: https://www.bleedingcontrol.org

Thank you,
SES Emergency Preparedness Cohort

Shamrock Run!

The Shamrock Run is right around the corner—Sunday, March 17th—and our school is again volunteering at the bag drop-off and pick-up for all the runners. It's a really fun experience; the kids who participated last year had a blast AND it gets them their service hours for the quarter, as well as earning $25 per volunteer for the Go Fund! Last year that amounted to $625 to help fund SES field study—including the middle school marine bio trips that are right around the corner!

Please encourage your students to volunteer. Parents are welcome, too. Students can sign up with their friends, cheer on the runners, eat donuts, and raise money for their trips. For more details and to sign up, contact me at jarrett@nworksrealty.com or 503-407-4200.
