Welcome to the 2017-18 SES Middle School Service Blog!!!
"True service learning for social justice is a shared partnership!"
What service learning is NOT
-one-sided
-charity
-volunteering without connecting
What service learning IS
-two-sided
-mutually beneficial
-tied to outcomes
How could this article from "Oregon Humanities" about our most recent SES 3rd grade musical connect to our approach to service in the middle school this school year??? --> More to the Story...
Garden
Sunnyside Garden Day - Sunday, September 24th - 9am - 1pm
A school garden work party! A lot of people do a little bit. It takes a community to grow a garden like this, so let's dig in together. Drop in any time between 9 am and 1 pm and be a part of the garden magic.

Mt. Tabor Restoration Event
-Saturday, September 30th
The Nature Conservancy is hosting a volunteer restoration even with Portland Parks and Recreation at Mt. Tabor Park on Saturday, September 30th. We are expecting 150 volunteers at the event. It is a 3-hour event followed by free lunch and music at the Mt. Tabor picnic shelter and I think would be a good fit for middle school service requirements.
We do require registration to ensure our parent permission paperwork is complete. We have to turn away minors who show up without a parent or a signed waiver from one, so this detail is important.
Event details and registration information can be found online:

Let me know if you have questions. You can contact me here or at The Nature Conservancy at mdougherty@tnc.org. Thanks! - Molly Dougherty
