"True service learning for social justice is a shared partnership!"

\What are you going to do for your Term 2 service learning experience? How is this going to go beyond one-sided charity that doesn't build relationships? How will it go beyond your previous experiences, deepen connections, be 'two-sided,' and benefit all involved?

What service learning is NOT
-one-sided
-charity
-volunteering without connecting

What service learning IS
-two-sided
-mutually beneficial
-tied to outcomes

8th Graders - High School Environmental Leadership Project (with Jan Zuckerman)

HELP (High School Environmental Leadership Project), youth from around the city coming together around environmental justice in their schools and communities, is currently organizing a series of free environmental justice tours for youth (high schoolers, 8th grade ok, too). The first one on Dec 2, from 10-4 PM, will focus in on air quality since it is on the same day as the last public hearing on Cleaner Air Oregon. The hearing will be a stop along the tour, which mainly follows the MAX Yellow Line.

We hope youth will gain their own understanding of environmental justice based on their own story and those they hear during the tour.  We are looking for youth to attend one, then help to lead one in some way in the future (need-based stipends are available for this!). We are planning to do this tour again on February 3 and April 7th, so please save those dates!

Here is the registration link. All who register and show up will be part of a raffle for some fun prizes. It’ll be a cold day and the tour will be mostly via public transit, so we will have places where we stop to warm up, have lunch and snacks and move around. The time will fly by!

Space is limited, so please ask youth to register ASAP- come with a group of friends or on their own!

Mujeres Luchadores - Wreath Making Fundraiser
Saturday, November 18th, 8am-1pm
Woodburn, Oregon
Sign-up and arrange transportation with Cori (room 209 or clongstr@pps.net)
Limited spaces available for this incredible learning opportunity!!!

The SES Wreath and Poinsettia Sale is a school-wide fundraiser that benefits our entire community. This year our wreath sale will support Sunnyside AND Mujeres Luchadoras Progresistas (Women Striving for Progress). Mujeres Luchadoras Progresistas (MLP) is a group of farm worker women who create economic development and promote leadership among women in their community. They recognize that women overcome exploitation and injustice when they organize and reclaim their rights. By purchasing our wreaths from MLP we can support these efforts.
Their wreath project has made a substantial difference in the lives of farm worker women and their families. Since 1992 MLP has been able to provide part-time employment during the three month holiday season to over 170 farm worker women. The holiday season is the time of the year with the least amount of farm work available and a time when families struggle most to pay the rent and provide for their families.
The money that women earn through the wreath project goes towards their family’s household expenses: rent, utilities, holiday expenses, warm clothing, and food. So, wreaths cost a little bit more this year, and Sunnyside may make a little less money, but in the long run so much more is gained. This decision allows Sunnyside to exercise what we try to teach and illustrate what we can accomplish as a community.
